Alkaline Diet

What is alkaine diet?

An alkaline diet is a diet that emphasizes fresh fruit, vegetable, grains, protein sources, spices and beverages. Alkaline dieting teaches about correct eating habits and lifestyle compare to typical western diet. After being digested, all foods that we eat release either an acid or an alkaline base into our blood. Meat, grain, fish, and salt etc all produce acid, so in typical Western diet became more acid-producing. However, consumption of fresh friut and vegetables decreased. Alkaline diet is how we should consume more alkaline based food in order to balance the acid food we absorbed.

The Theory of Alkaline Diet

The theory behind the alkaline diet is that our diet should reflect to pH level between 7.35 and 7.45, and should be close to alkaline. However, acid-producing foods disrupt this balance and promotes the loss of essential minerals such as calcium and sodium, and this imbalance is thought to make people to illness. Therefore, choosing high alkaline foods is one of the steps towards good health.

In some research studies, person has the following symptoms and other illnesses have been turning into a better condition after participated with alkaline diets:

  • Excessive mucous production
  • Nasal congestion
  • Cold and flu
  • Headache
  • Lack of energy
  • Anxiety and nervousness

Furthermore, there is evidence that alkaline diets may help prevent the formation of calcium kidney stones, osteoporosis, and age-related muscle wasting.

Safety Concerns

Of course, we also need the right amount of acid in our system. Alkaline diet doesn’t necessarily mean that we should completely stop eating foods that contain acid. In fact, some fruits and vegetables also contain mild to high level of acid. However, when we aware the acidity level of our diet, we can lessen our intake of acidic foods and maintain the ideal pH balance of our body.

Please note that people with acute or chronic kidney failure should not use the alkaline diet unless under a doctor’s supervision. And of course, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before trying a new diet.
